Quoted on Singapore’s Anti-Haze Law Reforms on The Business Times and South China Morning Post
Our Head of ESG, Dr Joseph Chun, was recently quoted in The Business Times and South China Morning Post, sharing his insights on the recent amendments to Singapore’s Transboundary Haze Pollution Act (THPA).
In The Business Times, Dr Chun highlighted the importance of recognising transboundary haze as a material governance risk, particularly for companies operating in the forestry, plantation and agricultural commodities sectors in high-risk jurisdictions. He noted that the amendments reinforce the need for stronger corporate oversight and accountability, while emphasising that corporate oversight obligations should remain proportionate to each company’s actual exposure and risk profile.
In the South China Morning Post, Dr Chun discussed the effectiveness of increased financial penalties in deterring offenders, noting that their impact would depend on factors such as a company’s annual revenue and the likelihood of conviction. He also highlighted the reputational consequences for offending companies and potential enforcement challenges involving firms whose assets are held entirely overseas.
