SLB Acted for the Successful Applicant in an S97 LPA Application; Disciplinary Tribunal’s Decision Set Aside

16 3 月, 2026

Shook Lin & Bok’s Litigation & Dispute Resolution team has successfully acted for the Applicant in CBB v Wong Tien Leong William [2026] SGHC 53, a landmark decision on solicitors’ professional duties when acting for vulnerable clients.

The High Court set aside a Disciplinary Tribunal’s dismissal of several charges against a senior practitioner. The Court found that a prima facie case of “grossly improper conduct” had been made out in relation to the practitioner’s acting for a vulnerable client, who was found to be lacking capacity to make decisions for herself at the time.

The Judgment also provided valuable guidance on the application of sections 42 to 45 of the Evidence Act 1893, on admitting the Court of Appeal’s previous judgment on mental capacity in the disciplinary proceedings.

The matter will now proceed to the Court of Three Judges.

The High Court’s judgment can be accessed here.

This matter was featured in The Business Times.

The Shook Lin & Bok team was led by by Partner Jamal Siddique, and supported by Partner Poh Yee Shing, Senior Associate Suresh Viswanath, and Associate Aisyah Az Zuhra.
