Partner Joseph Chun quoted in Lianhe Zaobao article title “ICJ Ruling Clarifies Climate Duties – Experts Urge COP30 Fossil Fuel Phase-Out”

In his latest interview with Lianhe Zaobao 联合早报, featured in the article “ICJ Ruling Clarifies Climate Duties – Experts Urge COP30 Fossil Fuel Phase-Out” (国际法院裁决已阐明气候责任专家促COP30淘汰化石燃料), our ESG Partner Dr Joseph Chun emphasised the International Court of Justice ruling: all nations have a legal duty to protect the global climate system from human-induced greenhouse gas emissions under the Paris Agreement and customary international law.
This obligation applies even if a country withdraws from the Paris Agreement or is not a party to it. Where international law is breached, the offending state must cease its wrongful conduct, provide assurances against repetition, and make full reparation for the harm caused. The state may also suffer reputational damage and face domestic pressure including through domestic courts to comply with its international obligations.
